Liberty

Alone, she leans towards the bathroom sink

As one tear drops

And one curl falls into her cheek

Revealing, she has nothing left to offer him

Not a chance to seize knowledge

Or afford a life that falls under living

And while they claimed to save his life

And expected a woman to rise beyond herself

unnaturally, calling it natural motherhood

They would not listen

When she said

‘The statue of liberty

Was just small enough for you to betray me’

And like the stroke of an axe

Or a convention bothered by decay

Her currency to freedom, Her rights,

Were stripped away, legally
